Open Thread: Open Threads

(Posted by chris the cynic)

I’m basically out of ideas here (I did Doctor who) and we have no submissions for prompts  at the moment.  If an open thread for Doctor Who* can only get two people other than myself to talk** I think I’m out of conversation generating ideas.

So, open thread prompt: what should be prompts for future open threads.

* Something which contains 799 TV episodes, two films in which Grand Moff Tarkin plays a different person of the same name and vaguely similar plot, three spin off series in addition to one attempted spin off series, hundreds of novels, comics, and audio dramas, and so on.

**  In a conversation that I  think was rather one sided. So if you disagree with what was said in that thread, please go there and speak up.

Well, I don’t see anything wrong with reusing ideas. Like, after we had the “frivolous” things to do with wealth thread, I thought of a bunch more, so if that thread happened semi-monthly or something, I feel like I’d have more to say.

What about a thread that’s specifically about checking in and sharing concerns? We do it at church and in covenant groups, and in open threads elsewhere… So maybe it would be repetitive. Or more specific things, like a Health Thread or an Employment/welfare thread… If you’re having a hard time that might seem like a depressing idea, but in my experience sharing frustrations and difficulties etc. make them, if not better, at least a little lighter of a burden for a while. And other people get the chance to be supporting and and listen, and even if that’s all you have to offer, that’s a lot… And we get to cheer on other people’s awesome accomplishments, and share in the glow of victory or whatever…

And also maybe a Good News type open thread? Like “In the past two weeks/month, what did you see or hear or read (or taste?) or learn about that made you smile or laugh or cheer or buoyed your faith in humanity or some segment thereof.

And what about holiday gift threads? I’ve just celebrated a family birthday, and have been messing around this Small Business Saturday contemplating buying gifts from various slacktiverse-ites. So perhaps a shameless self-promotion thread of things you can buy, and maybe another thread of gift ideas, including donations, that seem like they might interest folks here.

Asking what works would make for interesting deconstructions would probably be fun, even if few people are likely to have the time to do in-depth examinations of them.

+1 that third Lonespark comment. And the first two aren’t bad ideas either.

I also think a rich source of open thread ideas might be movie or other story premises.

Like, if we could learn things via brain plug, like in The Matrix, what would you want to learn? If you were limited to say, 5 or 10 additional skills, but maybe you could swap out old for new after a certain time, how would you decide what to learn first?

Or, if you were stuck in a time loop like in Groundhog Day, how would you spend your time? (Have we had that already? I still think these things can be recycled. People’s answers often change after a while.)

What would you do with limited shape-shifting abilities? If you could control one element, what would it be and why? How do you think that would play out? (I was originally thinking Earth/Air/etc., but then I thought it would be awesome to use the actual periodic table. What can a uranium-bender do? Etc.)

If life were like an RPG, and you could take disadvantages to gain better stats/more talents, what would you want to give up or get? How might you live your life so that a “disadvantage” wouldn’t have negative impact?

And please do point out if some of these premises are problematic so we can try to make them less so if used.

I might be willing to post some open threads on stuff like this, and think up more. But probably we would need a backup person, since I have thus far fallen down on the job Cute/Interesting Pictures-wise.

All of Lonespark’s ideas sound promising to me. Also calendar-based stuff — Wikipedia has decent pages for each day of the year talking about things that happened then, and there’s often something thought-provoking among them.

Ooooh, yes, the calendar idea is good. I love holidays, and there are tons, and every day has interesting stuff from history.

There actually was a variant of the calendar idea tried at one point revolving around not open threads but articles. It would just be, on the forum, our next article is to be on the [day] of [month] here’s a list of everything significant that happened on [day] of [month] in the last 3,000 years or so. Doesn’t that inspire anyone (who has time) to write anything? (Sadly no.)
