Open Thread: Introductions and reintroductions

(by chris the cynic)

If you’re relatively new to here, or you lurk, this is an opportunity to introduce yourself.  If you’ve been around longer, like say since the beginning of time, please take a moment to reintroduce yourself.

This thread was inspired when someone commented to me that they couldn’t remember what pronoun to use regarding a long standing member they’d been talking to since before there was a Slacktiverse.

Hold that thought. (You’ll see why next week.) The rest of y’all, carry on.

Firedrake. Part of the patriarchy (white heterosexual cis male, not yet dead though). I try to do better than that. RPGs, boardgames, wargames, computers, waaaay too many computers. I would be an anarchist if I could just rewrite human nature a bit first; support my kickstarter to rewrite human nature. You’ll enjoy it. Really, you will, it’s right here in the new mindset code. Where was I? British, hence unusual posting times.

Although I have participated only to a limited degree in The Slacktiverse, I am, in fact, one of the Ancient Ones of the greater Slackticosmos. I have been a Slacktivite since the ancient days of Old-School Slacktivist; yea, even since Fred was still discussing the first of The World’s Worst Books (TM). I even participated in the Thursday Open Thread Flame Wars (anyone remember those?). Rather like The Master (or, I suppose, Paul McCartney), I keeeep comiiiiing baaaack, mwahahaHAHAHA!

    o hai, ellie!

  5. christhecynic January 7, 2014 at 11:29 am

First off, apparently it’s Zora Neale Hurston’s birthday, which might have made for a better open thread.

I’m Chris, lowercase works fine too and i generally use it with “the cynic” though there are exceptions (ChrisTheCynic looks better than christhecynic, so in the absence of spaces…)

I am, at long last, a professional author. I made more money returning milk bottles than I did to get that “professional” there but I’m published and paid so yay.

I mostly do things working off of other fiction, particularly bad fiction trying to bring out the good lurking right bellow the surface hence I’ve done a fair amount on Twilight and Left Behind.

I’ve got three ongoing series out of that. For Left Behind I have Skewed Slightly to the Left, trying to pull out the good story that you can kind of sort of see. For Twilight I have Snarky Twilight, which is Bella trying to stay sane while being stuck in, you know, Twilight, and I have Edith and Ben, which is a version of Twilight in which the characters are not assholes (also they are gender-flipped, but the not-asshole thing is the bigger change.)

    And stuff.

    Yeah, I’m me.

  6. froborr January 7, 2014 at 2:07 pm

Hey. I’m Froborr, another one who remembers the long-ago days of Thursday Flame Wars. My primary claim to fame is that I kind of helped kill Slacktiverse 1.0? I didn’t mean to.

I fancy myself a postmodernist and I have pretensions of academia despite an utter lack of anything beyond an undergrad degree. I wrote a book about My Little Pony. Sometimes I vomit personal nonsense into an open thread because I have no RL friends, despite there being several people I know IRL who would probably argue that I do.

I have a blog which I actually manage to keep more or less on schedule, and a long line of abandoned blogs which I did not manage to keep remotely on schedule. At the on-schedule blog I natter about ponies, and I’m about to start nattering about Puella Magi as well.

  7. depizan January 7, 2014 at 2:43 pm

I’m depizan, or Mac, and I’ve been around for a while, though I really only lurked in the original Slacktiverse. I’m an amature artist and I write Star Wars: the Old Republic fanfic, and some day may return to writing non-fanfic space adventure stories. I’m a library clerk.
I’m afraid I don’t really feel like claiming any pronouns, so whatever you feel like, as long as they’re for people.

  8. Lonespark January 7, 2014 at 4:18 pm

Hi. I’m Lonespark. I was around in Ye Olden Days, though I largely lurked. One of my pet peeves is people treating religion like it’s a monolith. This includes atheists who don’t believe in some very specific gods and believers who try to recruit members of minority faiths into efforts to erode church-state separation.

I used to live in Phoenix. Now I live in New England. I have met Froborr and chris the cynic in person, and also Izzy. I am on a mission to meet lots of Slacktivites/Slacktiversites and Ramblites in person, but it’s a long-term mission… Oh, and I’m jealous of the people who got to go to the Rally to Restore Sanity and meet Fred and Will Wildman and so forth.

I’m Heathen and I have two kids and I’ve been unemployed for a long time and now I sort of have a job substitute teaching. I like LOTR and The Hobbit. I struggle with mental illness. My favorite color is turquoise and/or teal. My favorite Star Trek is DS9. My favorite thing about religion is holidays. And food.

  9. Firedrake January 7, 2014 at 4:56 pm

Hey Raj! I think you may have got to Original Slacktiverse about the same time I did, but I didn’t comment for a while.

  10. inquisitiveraven January 8, 2014 at 12:03 am

Another old-timer from the original Slacktivist here. I go by Inquisitive Raven most of the time except on Google where I’m Rhoadan. I attempted to run a Mage: the Ascension take on Left Behind online, but it sort of fell apart before I even got the thing started. I might try to revive it someday. I found the worldbuilding interesting at any rate.

Something for the weekly post: Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) has introduced a bill to repeal government funding for Abstinence Only sex ed. The Center for Inquiry is urging people to contact their congresscritters in support of this bill. I’m not exactly thrilled with CFI after some of the stunts they pulled last year, but I’ll support them on this.

  11. Shannon C. January 10, 2014 at 5:45 pm

I’m Shannon (or Shantastic on those days when I have pretensions of coming up with awesome online pseudonyms.) I was a really active lurker way back at the beginning of time (by which I mean I read all the Slacktivist posts and posted, like, three comments ever, but really got to feeling like everyone in the community was a friend.) These days I am trying to remember that the Slacktiverse exists, since accessibility-wise, the new and improved Slacktivist site is kind of a nightmare and I hate threaded comments, so I’m trying to remember to post more. I’m a recent transplant to Seattle, where I have a job I love, but socially I’ve yet to entirely find my niche. I read a lot of books, mostly romance, speculative fiction, and YA. I’m currently revising a paranormal romance I wrote with one of my friends which we’re hoping to self-publish. And someone else turned me onto the ponies as well, so now I actively lurk on Froborr’s blog.

  12. christhecynic January 10, 2014 at 6:09 pm

One of the reasons we’re at wordpress is because blogger didn’t give us necessary moderation and disqus was cutting off accessibility to people. Also one of the reasons for the decon round up: if you can’t say something at a disqus having site (say Fred’s or Ana’s) but you have something to say about the decon, you can at least in theory do it in the decon round up thread.

That doesn’t usually get used that way, but it was part of the intent to give people who wanted to talk about this or that deconstruction a place to do it where they didn’t have to deal with disqus.

(And all of this was before the “upgrade” to a less useful version of disqus.)

  13. alexseanchai January 13, 2014 at 5:04 pm

Hi, I am the artist formerly known as EllieMurasaki, and before that, as MercuryBlue. My name is Alex—’seanchai’ is pronounced ‘shanachee’, where the ‘ch’ is more of a ‘k’ like in ‘loch’—and my pronouns are ze/zir. I write, I draw, I bead, I cook, with particular focus lately on knitting and crochet. I have published two short stories in the collection A Dinner of Herbs: Tales from Scarborough Fair, and am waiting on one last thing from an editor to publish a poetry and flash fiction collection entitled Lavender Blue and other poems. I’m a Unitarian Universalist on one coast of the US, studying women’s studies, queer studies, and writing on the other coast (yay online classes). Pleasure to meet y’all again.

  14. Lonespark January 13, 2014 at 5:36 pm

    (And it’s Alex’s birthday.)

  15. christhecynic January 15, 2014 at 7:43 am

    Hi Alex.

    Happy late birthday.

If you haven’t changed your email address, please do sign any submissions (with the proper name of course) because fucking up your name is exactly the kind of fuck up I’m likely to make. I think we’d both feel better if I didn’t do that.
