We have a forum; do we actually care about that fact?

(by chris the cynic)

A notification recently went out that, unless someone did something, our forum would be deleted due to inactivity.

It won’t be deleted, because I told it not to delete the forum, but the fact that it was completely inactive raises the question of whether or not it really matters.  We’re not using it at the moment.

When the Slacktiverse at Typepad was closing things were both uncertain and rushed.  One thing that wasn’t clear is whether the Slacktiverse should continue as a blog or instead become a forum or maybe mutate into a Centaur.  Actually, I don’t think the last one was discussed.

So we did both, and we did it in a hurry.  The forum software used, like the blog software used, was chosen for no reason other than the fact that Ana was familiar with it and was therefore able to set up the new forum, and blog, quickly.  It turned out that the blog platform (blogger) wasn’t the best for the Slacktiverse which is why were’re at wordpress now.  I don’t think we ever really had a discussion of whether or not there was a better forum platform for the Slacktiverse.

The truth is that we never discussed the forum much at all.  So this is for discussing it.

Should we just leave it to disappear? Should we keep it around?  Is there something that could be done to make it more useful?

I feel like, with the relatively small size of the community, the forum is just one more thing to keep up with. Things the forum was used for, like the collaborative story and meetup planning, could be done here in open threads and “This Week…” and then I think more people would see them.

I don’t see much purpose to the forum. We weren’t using it, that’s why the notice went out. Like Lonespark, I don’t see much purpose to it.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s just another RSS feed, and this place is sufficient for our current usage.

    Yeah, let the forum go.

For whatever it’s worth, I also never saw much point to the forum, though I tried to encourage its use since we had it and some people wanted it.

I would have liked it if the people who wanted a forum had been able to make it work, but I could never really picture that happening, and I always expected that the most it would be would be a secondary space to this. It hasn’t even been that.
