Writer Workshop for April 16th, 2014

(Posted by chris the cynic).

Those of you who also frequent Ana Mardoll’s Ramblings will find this somewhat familiar.  Here, as there, it was requested that there be a regular post to talk about writing projects (and other artwork-creation). Thus this post exists.

What are you working on? How are you feeling about it? What thoughts and/or snippets would you like to share? How does your activism work into your art? What tropes are you hoping to employ and/or avoid? Are there any questions you’d like to ask or frustrations you’d like to vent?  Writing workshop below!

I’ve had writer’s block of late, which is no fun.

I’m swamped with book stuff, but I am also considering completely revamping the fantasy setting I was playing with to be… well, I’m not sure what the word for this would be. The idea is a society roughly as technologically advances a hours in terms of things like food availability, medicine, life expectancy, was of travel and communication, but where all of it is based on applied magic. Sort of like a cross between urban fantasy and “fantasy with rivets.” The characters and political situation will remain broadly the same, it’s just I realized peasants and lords in castles and swords are REALLY BORING.

Hmm. And I just had a thought: I was playing with the idea that the existence of a fixed number of godlike beings who each associate with a human champion necessarily means that there will always be one kingdom for each of them (kingdoms with two inevitably split when the champions fall out, kingdoms with none inevitably get conquered). But given the setting change, it might be more interesting to have them be at the center of guilds or corporations instead, operating across and in tension with nations.

I very much like those ideas about godlike entities. The politics of the gods is a think that interests me, as one might think based on my devotion to The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms and sequels.

You may well like my story, then. =)

I have been oscillating back and forth between calling them Archons, because they are beings of great power over all material things, but nonetheless are a part of this world rather than gods standing over it; or alternatively dragons, because most of them look like dragons, there are no other dragons in the setting, and the sort of people who buy fantasy novels tend to like dragons.
