Open Thread: Games you haven’t played

What is a game/what are some games you haven’t played but would like to?

I can’t get into the right mindset for role playing games, it just doesn’t click for me. But I love the worldbuilding that goes into a good one.

Mostly there are all sorts of variations on chess that I’d love to try, but I’ve never had the opportunity to do so.

Consider Jupiter, in my eyes it’s sort of the holy grail of chess variants. It’s not the largest, for two dimensional chess that honor probably goes to Taikyoku Shogi* but Jupiter was the first mind-blowingly complex variant I encountered.

Also I have recently learned of a game named, “Night of the Grand Octopus”:

Long ago, the Grand Octopus, a cosmic Being with divine powers, reigned supreme in the world…until an untoward combination of circumstances imprisoned Him on the ocean floor. He Idly slept, dreaming of the day He would return to glory.

Modern day: You are one of his chosen, and you have recruited visionaries in order to form a cult dedicated to His glory. The time has come, your dreams have made that clear: Tonight, the stars will be correctly aligned to perform the ritual to call Him to the surface to reign again.

You must sneak into a celebrated English university for young sorcerers tonight, in order to find the final magical components for the ritual. Because tonight is the Night of the Grand Octopus! Unfortunately, you are not alone…

    * Shogi is “Japanese Chess” which is a shorthand for saying, “We think that Chess descends from a game that originated in India; you didn’t think that game just moved west did you? There are plenty of versions resulting from it’s eastward journey and the primary Japanese descendant is known as Shogi.”

The new Smash Bros is high on the list. Also Zelda: Link Between Worlds, Ace Attorney 5, and Phoenix Wright vs. Professor Layton. I kind of want to try Depression Quest, but I’m worried it’ll be trigger-y, so I haven’t.

Hey, coincidence! I found a nice Mancala set in a charity shop yesterday. Now all I need is to find someone to learn to play it with…

I am horrible at video games, so… lots and lots of video games that sound interesting, but are beyond my skill level.

I’d love to play a lot more classic RPGs, especially Xenogears, but they take way more time than I have. The only one that I ever got around to was FFVII, which I did love. Chris and I keep trying to play Legend of Mana but have such a long time in-between times we play that we forget what’s going on.

So, so many board, card, and video games – I’d like to be able to complete a NIS Strategy-RPG at some point, aside from Phantom Brave, including all the Land of Carnage and other extra content. Which I could do for days on end and not scratch.
