Open Thread: Music

(by chris the cynic)

Continuing on the same sort of theme, what music have you been listening to most recently?  What music do you recommend?  Do you happen to play an instrument, sing, or otherwise produce music?  Stuff like that.

A while back I heard this guy playing in the subway. I think it may have been that guy playing that song.

    Regardless, it was good.

It wasn’t until two days ago, when I saw him setting up, that I was finally able to find out who he was.

His name is Garv Bomjan, he has an album that you can get on Amazon and itunes, but I haven’t heard any of the songs on that so I can’t recommend it.

I work in a job that requires a fair amount of mental attention. I have trouble listening to songs – music with words – while I work because the songs compel my attention a lot more than my work does. The effect is quite strong, and I end up singing and bopping in my seat, generally disrupting the workplace.

I have a few go-to instrumental things (e.g. Philip Glass) and some foreign language songs (e.g. La Oreia de Van Gogh) which I can use for when I need to focus. Well, maybe not La Oreia de Van Gogh so much, which I can’t sing to but it still gets me dancing around.

I should invest in some more. Any suggestions?

Jukebox. Fanfic/art exchange where all the canons are songs and music videos nominated by the participants. Has produced some awesome fic the past two years and is just now opening the nominations stage for this year.

DawnM, as a programmer I find non-vocal music is ideal for maintaining concentration. http://www.musicforprogramming.net/ has modern electronic music mixes that might be to your taste. I’m also quite fond of earlier electronica, such as Tangerine Dream and their offshoots.

Since I moved my CD collection onto a big storage server I’m listening to a lot more music, and I have mixes for many of the things that I do. Which is more fun than I expected it to be, and I expected it to be quite fun

Last night I stood up and sang in public for the first time since I was about 10. I’m surprised at how not-nervous I was compared to my partner.

Still a pretty ragged beginning, but eh. Next time it’ll be easier, and we were nowhere near the worst there!
