Open Thread

(by chris the cynic)

I don’t even remember the last time I managed to get an open thread up.  I could look it up, but it’s not important.

How has everyone been?  Who is still here?  Anyone have anything they’d like to share?

[As a reminder, open thread prompts are meant to inspire conversation, not stifle it. Have no fear of going off topic for there is no off topic here.]

My new Internet home. I mean, Dreamwidth will always be my Internet home, but. You get what I’m saying.

There’s not a whole lot there at the moment, though. Just the link to my 2013 poetry collection (free download ebook, hint hint, feel free to tell me what you think of it) and the earrings I made today.

A thousand golden nerdloons to the first nerd who identifies the reference in my previous comment.

    Benny Hill, Spanish hotel sketch?

The city is replacing the sidewalks outside my house this week. I have a couple of concerns about this.

    1. We got no official notice that this would happen. What’s up with that? My mom came over to visit and said “why is there orange paint on your front garden?”. I wandered out to look and noticed the construction vehicles at the end of the street and inferred that my turn was coming soon. Spouse and I spent last evening in the cold drizzle digging up plants and concrete edging to move them out of harm’s way.

    2. In my opinion, the sidewalks were basically fine. Why are they spending their valuable resources replacing them? There was a bit of heaving, but I know the city has tools to grind off the bits that stick up too far. I suspect it’s because I live in the rich-people part of the city; somehow we are less able to cope with uneven sidewalks.

I’m sorry I haven’t been around much in recent months. Things have been… not good, mental health-wise. As of last Thursday I am back on medication for the first time in several years, but it’s too early to tell if that’s helping.

    @froborr,

I hope the medication is/does help. Mental health issues (like all health issues) really suck. 😦

Still here. The last couple posts on Pern have generated some significant discussion, mostly about how the people who are the nominal heroes of the story commit evil greater than the supposed villains.

Life outside is decent. I signed a contract to get published again, a conference put me on standby to speak there, and I’m supposed to hear back from the other one this week. Things are without major issue or expense right now.

Was gone for quite a while, but the Pern deconstructions brought me back (Thanks, Silver Adept!) Mostly been lurking, though, here and at Ana Mardoll’s.

Hope the meds help, froborr. My new psychiatrist got me off mine a few months ago, because I was finally at a place where I didn’t seem to need them anymore. That’s been going fairly well so far. Still, I did need them when I started, and they did get me out of a really rough patch– here’s hoping the same for you, froborr!

    Wish you well, Froborr!

I got new fishies that have settled into their pond nicely, but they’re really skittish and won’t eat from your hand like the old fat big ones used to. They should tame down as they grow bigger and older, though; hopefully over the summer they’ll grow enough. We also got little rosy red minnows which are a lot more active and fearless. The minnows only grow about 3-4 inches maximum and only come in two colors, but that’s big enough to avoid getting eaten when the other fishies (koi, goldfish) grow up. Supposedly as native fish they are cold tolerant enough they’ll happily swim and dart under ice during the winter, which might be nice to see.

I still check in a couple of times per week – but not too often, because the page loads very slowly (this has been true since IIRC sometime last year).

For the last year or so, I’ve been on a medication which helps me sleep, though still not as well as I’d like. It doesn’t help me with depression or anxiety per se (which was what it was originally supposed to do) but having more sleep makes me less depressed.
