Writer Workshop June 10th, 2015

(Posted by chris the cynic)

Those of you who also frequent Ana Mardoll’s Ramblings will find this somewhat familiar.  Here, as there, it was requested that there be a regular post to talk about writing projects (and other artwork-creation). Thus this post exists.

What are you working on? How are you feeling about it? What thoughts and/or snippets would you like to share? How does your activism work into your art? What tropes are you hoping to employ and/or avoid? Are there any questions you’d like to ask or frustrations you’d like to vent?  Writing workshop below!

I’ve had an idea for a story based on the perennial idea that emotions are people in your head (as proof this idea never goes away, I think a movie using the idea is coming out in a week or two) which goes like this: Bad guy kidnaps most of a heroic characters emotions leaving only ones he thinks will either incapacitate character or make character suffer (or both.) Fear, Depression, and Apathy are forced to try to save the day (mostly led by Fear who is terrified of what will happen if they don’t act heroic-like.)

I wrote about the idea, and a short conversation between the three showing how it would work, but not much else, or indeed much at all.

I wrote about the possibility for fiction that uses a species with unmistakable (unambiguous) sexual dichotomy as a vehicle to explore how gender is so much more complicated than body type, or dichotomy, or any of that stuff. I didn’t actually write any such fiction, just how it might work and why I was inspired on this subject by a game about teenage squid-people with ink weapons.

I wrote a few things of click-bait titles for religious things. The best might be the only contribution in the comments (thus not by me) so far: “High priests hate him; Galilean carpenter discovers secret to eternal life.”

The deeply scary nonfiction book is in the editor’s queue. So that’s that.

I’m thinking about writing a completely unsaleable novel, which about four people will want to read, because it’s the sort of thing I want to read and it’s a way of finding out whether I can do this fiction thing.
