Open Thread: All of my people are pink on the outside!

(idea by Lonespark, written as vaguely remembered by chris the cynic)

[Pinker still after unprotected exposure to sunlight, unless it turns that really, really dark pink we here call “red”.]

Imagine that Earth was one of the planets the Enterprise came across, or that it appeared as just another planet in another scifi show’s line up of easy-to-sum-up-in-a-single-line planets.  How would earth be portrayed?

[As a reminder, open thread prompts are meant to inspire conversation, not stifle it. Have no fear of going off topic for there is no off topic here.]

My best guess is that the stand out feature would be economic inequality or colonialism, which are pretty strongly intertwined.

When you realize that “The one percent” is an overly inclusive grouping, you begin to see how we seem like some dystopian writer’s version of Capitalism Gone Wrong. (And we are capitalism gone wrong, since capitalism says that money should always be circulating; never horded.)

On the other hand, colonialism has never stopped and even after the second world fell, the persistence of the third world is a damning reminder that colonies and satellites are still being exploited. (Except those that are no longer exploitable, those ones get all of the down side with none of the business.)

Plus, every treaty ever made with the Penobscot, no matter how egregiously it worked to steal their land and screw them over (usually illegally), always said that the river of the same name belonged to them. My governor is trying to argue that that doesn’t include any of the water (what else is a river?) Because we haven’t fucked them over enough, apparently.

I don’t even remember any details of this conversation now. Boo.

Either what chris said, or the mass extinction species. Just a swarming horde that destroys all life on any planet it touches.

Now I am having ideas of aliens coming here to offer asylum to bonobos or negotiate with octopuses. Alternately, time traveling cephalopods go back to save their Cretaceous ancestors and possibly alter the course of life on the planet.
