Open Thread: Mid-Month Check In, April 2016

(by chris the cynic)

What have you been doing of late?  How are you?  Are you still alive?  So forth.

If I can remember it and schedule it consistently, we’ll be going with the suggestion to do this monthly.  First Tuesday after the 15th seems as good a time as any to me.

[As a reminder, open thread prompts are meant to inspire conversation, not stifle it. Have no fear of going off topic for there is no off topic here.]

    Still here. The new search engine I wrote for Day Job has now been live for six days, and the vast majority of our users are just keeping on as before. So, success.

    I fucked up my back Sunday. A vacation day Monday (even though I hate using annual leave for health issues) and two meh nights of sleep seems to have partially cured it, and if I am careful I can probably go back to work today, but ow.

    I’m writing, at a halfway decent pace for me. Even if I still feel somewhat guilty about the contents of my current fic. (One of the heroes gets caught as a traitor to the evil Empire. He does not spend the fic having a good time. Even if most of his not good time is not “on camera.”) I am a wussy writer.

    @alexseanchai

    😦 I hope your back gets all the way better soon.

    @Firedrake,

    Yay, successful search engine!

    I am ruining everyone’s lives because money, how do you get it?

    AAAAAARGHHHH!

    I’m alive. Been busy studying physics/math.

    I read ‘A Natural History of Dragons’ recently, which I enjoyed, although I found annoying the moment where it recommended readers go out and try having nookie. Not that interested in that at this time, thank you very much. I also read the second book, which, happily, (perhaps in response to critique of previous) had an explicitly asexual character who escapes marriage.

    EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE AND I’M NOT OK.

    Ok, so, things are bad. But other things are good…

    (This change in perception and approach brought to you mostly by pancakes.)

    My back’s fine now, thanks for asking. I think it was just a strain. Bloody aggravating strain, though.

    24-Hour Readathon day! Woot woot! An hour forty in and two books down. \o/

    @only some stardust: That line annoyed me too. Some people can’t find a lover just by deciding to. I discussed it a bit with someone in the comments on this excerpt at Tor: http://www.tor.com/2016/03/22/excerpts-in-the-labyrinth-of-drakes-marie-brennan/
