Open Thread: Goals

(by chris the cynic)

Do you have any; do you feel you’re progressing toward them?

[As a reminder, open thread prompts are meant to inspire conversation, not stifle it. Have no fear of going off topic for there is no off topic here.]

    Goal: Diploma in June.

Progress: …well it’d be more if I were listening to the summer term week three lectures instead of farting around on the internet. It would certainly be more if I had listened to the week three lectures in week three. (It’s week four.)

    I have SO MANY GOALS.

They kind of have a bimodal distribution; short-to-medium-term and achievable and often repeatable on the one hand, then medium-to-long-term and YUGE on the other.

For the most part the first kind are the ones I need to worry about. I keep track of them. Habitica helps lots! Some are chores and paperwork. Others are meaningful and/or fun things that serve as rewards and re-energizing times.

Most of the big goals aren’t time sensitive and the things that need to change for me to achieve them involve other people and/or circumstances beyond my control. So I just keep them vaguely in mind, and some of the small goals move me/us closer…

Unfortunately a few aren’t like that. They’re like “Help my son find and maintain a school environment that allows him to stay emotionally healthy.” And that’s every day, and very urgent, and various authorities disagree with me on how to achieve it. So that sucks. At least it’s summer now, so we get a break…

Too many goals. Not enough accomplishing.

I end up feeling useless a lot of the time.
