Writer Workshop June 28th, 2017

(Posted by chris the cynic)

[Anyone who would feel more comfortable talking about non-writing creative work in a thread that doesn’t have “Writer” in the name, you may find this month’s creative corner thread useful.]

Those of you who also frequent Ana Mardoll’s Ramblings will find this somewhat familiar.  Here, as there, it was requested that there be a regular post to talk about writing projects (and other artwork-creation). Thus this post exists.

What are you working on? How are you feeling about it? What thoughts and/or snippets would you like to share? How does your activism work into your art? What tropes are you hoping to employ and/or avoid? Are there any questions you’d like to ask or frustrations you’d like to vent?  Writing workshop below!

    How do you all deal with creative funks where you can’t write a damned thing?

    Usually I approach things by “well filling” but these days I don’t have TV, am not getting new books, so I’m basically limited to free online fic and some videogames I bought a while ago but haven’t gotten around to playing.

    It is definitively not working.

    Sit in front of the word processor for two hours with no distractions. Write something, even if it’s just “why can I not write anything” over and over. Repeat every day.

    Swear a lot? Sorry, chris.

    I’m waiting on a sensitivity read on the basic concept of my portal fantasy wrt the race(s) of my three protagonist siblings. Meanwhile I’m trying to worldbuild and sort out the plot. It’s easier to plot what happened already in Phalēron than what happens after being booted back to Normalcy, USA. Since I’m definitively starting the story proper in Normalcy, that’s something of a problem; right now all I’ve got is about 2K of the protags reacting.

    @chris

    I don’t know. I’m kind of having the same problem. 😦

    Clearly, there’s an evil entity running around stealing people’s creativity.

    depizan77: Yup, and its name is “2017”.

    I got that sensitivity read back–he used the words “blown away”; I am exceedingly pleased–and I have a bit more story plotted. I need something good to happen to Protag 3, though, or for her to do something she’s proud of, since the first two scenes and the one planned a few scenes down are really hard on Protags 1 and 2.

    (Protag 2, Morgan, looks like a ten-year-old black boy. Eir white teacher is reacting to em as though ey’s a black boy. Ey are making trouble, by which I mean teacher is gonna be convinced eir parent wrote this here essay and ey will then demand a new essay topic and half an hour in which to prove teacher wrong. Since ey did write eir essay emself, teacher may not react…kindly…to the second essay looking enough like the first to prove the point.)

    So what good things could happen to, or be done by, Protag 3? (Keeping in mind that she’s a twenty-year-old black woman in the body of the eight-year-old black girl she used to be.) And how does what she, Teresa, does tie in to the next events involving Morgan and Protag 1, Vivian?
