Writer Workshop August 2nd, 2017

(Posted by chris the cynic)

[Anyone who would feel more comfortable talking about non-writing creative work in a thread that doesn’t have “Writer” in the name, you may find this month’s creative corner thread useful.]

Those of you who also frequent Ana Mardoll’s Ramblings will find this somewhat familiar.  Here, as there, it was requested that there be a regular post to talk about writing projects (and other artwork-creation). Thus this post exists.

What are you working on? How are you feeling about it? What thoughts and/or snippets would you like to share? How does your activism work into your art? What tropes are you hoping to employ and/or avoid? Are there any questions you’d like to ask or frustrations you’d like to vent?  Writing workshop below!

    CN suicidal ideation:

Vivian jogged up to [their] parents’ house on short preteen legs, water bottle thumping against [their] denim-covered hip. [They] paused in the shade of the dogwood tree to wipe itchy sweat from [their] face, straighten [their] glasses, and breathe the marginally cooler-seeming air.

Morgan, leaning on the shady side of the trunk, looked up at [them] in silence; […] [her] empty fingers twisted around one another restlessly

“Obol for your thoughts,” Vivian said, and gulped down some water.

Morgan laughed sourly. “Save it for the ferryman.”

I think I need to rework Morgan’s first scene to more clearly depict the ideation…but I don’t know.

Dammit why didn’t the blockquote work.

I’m not sure, I’m messing around with the formatting to see if I can fix it, but it looks like there’s absolutely nothing wrong so I’m not sure what’s up.

Blockquote has stopped working entirely. No idea why. I can use admin privileges to edit it into italics, which are still working, if you would like.

On the writing itself, if you want this particular bit to make clear that there’s suicidal ideation going on then I think you need to do need to change it to make it more clear.

As it stands it could easily be someone who’s just a bit morbid and not having any kind of death-ideation, and even if one does get that there is death-ideation that doesn’t mean they’ll realize it’s suicidal. There’s plenty of non-suicidal death-ideation. (Such as preoccupation with thoughts of dying in an accident.)

Could you do the italics thing, O Modly One?

This isn’t Morgan’s first scene, this is Vivian’s. It’s next scene that needs to do the heavy lifting on Morgan’s ideation. And I don’t think it has…
