Open Thread: Mid-Month Check In, January 2018

(by chris the cynic)

What have you been doing of late?  How are you?  Are you still alive?  So forth.

(sorry this is late)

[As a reminder, open thread prompts are meant to inspire conversation, not stifle it. Have no fear of going off topic for there is no off topic here.]

Doing things that will (theoretically) leave me energized takes energy, thus, requires first doing things that will leave me energized.

Also, my password on one work system has expired. I cannot access the change-password page without first changing my password.

THIS IS THE SONG THAT NEVER ENDS

I am. On the up side, I got a small promotion and raise at work. On the very down side, one of my cats is ill. The not going to get better kind of ill. (It is *probably* cancer. I say probably because an official diagnosis would require a biopsy, but that’s pretty risky, and there isn’t anything they could do for him. So it’s just a matter of making his last…however long…as comfortable as possible.)

Since I can no longer comment on Tor.com’s redesigned website, I’ll use this thread to reply to one of you on the current Silmarillion thread over there.

You were confused by the lotr.wikia article on giant spiders; well, that’s par for the course! That wiki is notoriously inaccurate (see e.g. this Reddit thread for discussion to that effect). They routinely publish purely made-up info with no justification in canon.

More accurate Tolkien references: In addition to the http://tolkiengateway.net site recommended in that Reddit thread, I rather like The Thain’s Book. There is also a vintage site called The Encyclopedia of Arda which is generally good. Of course, any secondary source will contain some inaccuracies.
